Khristenko becomes chair of Eurasian Economic Commission Board

MOSCOW. Dec 19 (Interfax) - Viktor Khristenko has been appointed as the Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission.

Documents, including a decision appointing the chairman of the Eurasian Economic Commission Board and its other members and distributing their duties, were signed at a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in the attendance of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Medvedev praised the outcome of the meeting. "We have just formed our first supranational body, which will promote integration. We have formed our Eurasian Commission," Medvedev said.

This is a serious step towards the formation of the Eurasian Economic Space, which will later develop into the Eurasian Economic Union.

The meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council witnessed the signing of international treaties, including the one on the prevention of money laundering and financing of terrorism in the transfers of money or monetary instruments across the Customs Union border.

The sides also signed a protocol amending the agreement of May 21, 2010, on certain aspects of the payment of customs duties and taxes on transit commodities, on peculiarities of the levying of duties and taxes, and on the payment procedures.
