India allocates $4 mln for Varzobsky HPP in Tajikistan
DUSHANBE. Dec 26 (Interfax) - India has allocated a $4 million loan to continue reconstruction of the Varzobsky HPP near Dushanbe, the Tajik Energy and Industry Ministry said.
This grant will be in addition to the $13 million grant India gave in 2006, which ended up not being enough to complete the modernization.
"Modernization will enable the capacity of each aggregate of the HPP to be increased by 1 megawatt and overall capacity at the HPP to reach 9.5 megawatts. Annual electricity output at the plant will total19 million kilowatt hours," the ministry said.
The Varzobsky HPP was built in 1938 with two aggregates. Modernization is expected to be completed in July 2012.
The Tajik Statistics Agency reported that electricity output in the country dropped 1.1% year-on-year in January-November 2011 to 14.67 billion kilowatt hours. Over 95% of the electricity produced in Tajikistan comes from hydro power plants.
