Electricity consumption in Georgia climbs 9.4% in 2011
TBILISI. Jan 24 (Interfax) - Georgia consumed 9.22 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2011, up 9.4% on 2010, Georgian Electricity System Commercial Operator (ESCO) said in a press release.
The customers of Energo-Pro Georgia (former United Energy Distribution Company), which is owned by Czech company Energo-Pro, consumed 2.53 billion kilowatt hours in 2011, 38.3% more than in 2010.
The customers of Tbilisi electricity distribution company Telasi, which is controlled by Inter RAO UES , were the next biggest consumers with 2.02 billion kilowatt hours, a 4.1% increase. Major companies and organizations with direct contracts with ESCO consumed 1.8 billion kilowatt hours, a drop of 13%.
Abkhazia consumed 1.61 billion kilowatt hours, 17.2% more than in 2010. Kakheti Energy Distribution, which is owned by Lithuanian concern Ahema Group, used 256.2 million kilowatt hours, a rise of 8%.
Electricity consumption in Georgia increased 10.3% year-on-year in 2010 to 8.43 billion kilowatt hours.
Electricity output totaled 10.1 billion kilowatt hours in 2011, 0.6% up on 2010. Georgia imported 470.0 million kilowatt hours of electricity in 2011, up 110%, and exported 930.6 million kilowatt hours, down 38.9%.
