Prokhorov calls for building new cities in Siberia
NOVOSIBIRSK. Jan 27 (Interfax) - Presidential candidate Mikhail Prokhorov believes three large-scale projects need to be implemented to spur development in Siberia.
"The first thing is the creation of a powerful cluster along the Chinese border to prevent China from encroaching into Russia. Consequently, there has to be a powerful processing cluster there to produce ready products that we will export to China," Prokhorov told reporters in Novosibirsk on Friday.
The second project is related to infrastructure development, primarily transport. "That is, trains should run at an average speed of 15-20km/h," he said.
Prokhorov reiterated that creating new enterprises is impossible without road construction.
Prokhorov also said new cities have not been built in Siberia for forty years. "We have not built new cities for over forty years. We have to build new cities in Siberia within the framework of its exploration," he said.
Prokhorov believes people should have a chance to choose where to live, in old cities or in new cities, and have freedom to travel, saying the abolition of all registration is a prerequisite for that.
"I find these three projects the main ones for Siberian exploration," he said.
