Kazakh banking sector assets up 6.5% in 2011
ALMATY. Feb 7 (Interfax) - The total assets of Kazakhstan's private banks totaled 12.809 trillion tenge as at January 1, 2012, demonstrating a 6.5% decline, the Financial Supervision Committee (FSC) of the National Bank said in a statement.
According to the Committee, as at January 1, 2012 assets denominated in foreign currencies accounted for 34.5% of total assets, or 4.424 trillion tenge in value (148.66 tenge/$1 on Feb. 7).
High-liquidity assets accounted for 20.8% of the banks' total assets as at January 1, 2012.
Banking sector equity was 1.961 trillion tenge as at January 1, 2012, or an increase of 7.8% in 2011.
In 2011 the total revenues of the second-tier banks amounted to 4.466 trillion tenge, total expenditures to 4,475.3 billion tenge (exclusive of the income tax, which stood at 25.6 billion tenge as at January 1, 2012).
The loan portfolio of the banks, including inter-bank loans, came to 10.442 trillion tenge as at January 1, 2012, an increase of 15.2%. Foreign currency loans accounted for 44.1% of the loan portfolio, or 4.604 trillion tenge.
The structure of the banks' loan portfolio as at January 1, 2012 was as follows: standard loans accounted for 25.8% (26.4% in January 2011), doubtful loans 52.4% (53.5% in January 2011), and bad loans 21.8% compared (20.1% in January 2011).
As at January 1, 2012 the loans classified as category 5 doubtful and bad loans were valued at 3.651 trillion tenge or 35% of the total loan portfolio, a 23.6% increase.
Loans more than 90 days overdue were valued at 3,195.7 billion tenge, or 30.6% of the total loan portfolio, as at January 1, 2012. This demonstrates an increase of 48.4% in November.
As at January 1, 2012 the banks' provisions totaled 3.336 trillion tenge, or 31.9% of the total loan portfolio.
According to the FSC statement, the total liabilities of the banking sector as at January 1, 2012 were valued at 11.516 trillion tenge, or an increase by 7.5%. Liabilities to non-residents amounted to 2.267 trillion tenge, or a decline of 11.5% in 2011.
Liabilities denominated in foreign currencies came to 4,663.1 billion tenge in value, accounting for 40.5% of the banks' total liabilities.
There are 38 second-tier banks operating in Kazakhstan. The population of Kazakhstan exceeds 16.6 million people.
