Tymoshenko cassation appeal hearing set for May 15 - lawyer

KYIV. March 20 (Interfax) - Ukraine's High Specialized Court for Civil and Criminal Cases is expected to look into a cassation appeal against former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's conviction in the gas case on May 15, Tymoshenko's lawyer Oleksandr Plakhotnyuk told Interfax.

"I was notified by the information service of the High Specialized Court today that a hearing into the cassation appeal was set for 10:00 a.m. on May 15," he said.

The court will not hold any preliminary sessions dealing with the appeal, he added.

Kyiv's Pechersky District Court sentenced Tymoshenko to seven years in prison on October 11, 2011, after convicting the former premier of exceeding her authority when signing gas contracts with Russia in 2009. She was banned from holding public office for three years as well.

The court also ruled in favor of a lawsuit filed by national energy company Naftogaz Ukrainy against Tymoshenko, ordering the former prime minister to pay more than 1.5 billion hryvni in damages to the firm.

Tymoshenko was taken into custody during a court session on August 5, 2011, and was sent to a remand center in Kyiv. She is serving her term in a Kharkiv jail.
