BAKU. April 18 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan plans to increase its electricity capacities by 20% to 7,800 MW by 2014.
"Over the past five years, power stations with a capacity of 1,500 MW have been built and repaired. At the moment, the energy system has a capacity of 6,500 MW. By the end of 2013, 1,300 MW of capacity will be introduced to the republic's energy system," Azerbaijani First Deputy Prime Minister Yaqub Eyyubov said in an article published on Wednesday in the official press.
Azerbaijan's regions have been fully provided with energy supplies. "At the moment, electricity generated in the republic exceeds the requirements by 30%," he said.
The Azerbaijani government is currently working towards the further development and use of alternative energy sources, Eyyubov said.
