Kazakhstan ups cargo handling 16.7% in Jan-April

ALMATY. May 14. (Interfax) - Kazakhstan boosted freight turnover 16.7% year-on-year to 145.819 billion tonne-kilometers in January-April 2012, the State Statistics Agency reported.

Cargo handling by railway grew 12.2% to 76.058 billion tonne-km, and by automobile transport - 46.6% to 34.733 billion tonne-km. Meanwhile, turnover by sea transport declined 5.5% to 898.1 million tonne-km, and by airborne transport - 45.4% to 15.8 million tonne-km.

Freight handling by pipeline reached 34.112 billion tonne-km, up 5%.

Kazakhstan saw its passenger turnover jump 25.7% and top 64.43 billion passenger-km in January-April.
