Medvedev signs directive on appointing Sechin chairman of Rosneft management

MOSCOW. May 22 (Interfax) - Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has said he signed a directive to the Rosneft board of directors on electing Igor Sechin the chairman of the company's management.

"I have just signed a directive to the Rosneft board of directors so that you occupy the office of the head of the company's executive body," Medvedev said at a meeting with Sechin on Tuesday.

The prime minister mentioned that Sechin has actively dealt with energy issues as a deputy prime minister of late. "You have improved their management. Therefore, I believe you are entitled to handle these results," he said.

Medvedev called Rosneft "a major and very important company," which "would not have made a great breakthrough without your involvement in the past years. It is a very important supplier of energy resources and oil products, is one of the budget-forming enterprises, and has a very good potential for investment cooperation," he said.

Medvedev asked Sechin "to work in this company with all of your energy."

"I wish you success in this," Medvedev said in addressing the ex-deputy prime minister.

Igor Sechin was born in Leningrad in 1960. He graduated from the Leningrad State University in 1984. He served on the Leningrad City Council's executive committee in 1988-1991 and in the St. Petersburg city administration in 1991-1996.

From 1996 to 1998, Sechin worked in the presidential property management department and in the presidential main audit department.

In 1999, Sechin headed the secretariat of a first deputy prime minister and was appointed the head of the prime minister's secretariat in August 1999.

In 2000, Sechin was appointed a deputy presidential chief of staff, and in March 2004 he was also given the office as a presidential aide.

Since May 2008, Sechin has been a deputy prime minister.
