UMMC to invest 3.6 bln rubles in area around copper-nickel deposits

YEKATERINBURG/VORONEZH. May 25 (Interfax) - LLC Mednogorsky Copper and Sulfur Plant (MMSK), the unit of Urals Mining and Metallurgical Company (UMMC) that won the tender for the development of the Yelanskoye and Yekinskoye copper and nickel deposits in Voronezh Region's Novokhopersk district, plans to invest at least 3.6 billion rubles in the development of the area, the regional government said in a statement.

When the tender was held, the regional government insisted on compliance with environmental safety standards in the development of the deposits. The members of the tender commission decided unanimously that the proposals presented by MMSK are the safest for the region's environment, the statement said.

The company's proposals for investment in the socioeconomic development of the Novokhopersk district were also more substantial.

UMMC officials were unavailable for comment.

Once the companyreceives the licenses to the deposits, it will sign a cooperation agreement wit the regional government.
