KazGiproNefteTrans, Technip Italy to develop documentation for Pavlodar refinery modernization

PAVLODAR. May 28. (Interfax) - Kazakhstan's Engineering Company KazGiproNefteTrans LLP and Italy's Technip Italy S.p.A. have finalized a contract to develop design and estimate documentation for a project to modernize the Pavlodar oil refinery.

The trilateral contract was signed in Pavlodar on Monday by the Pavlodar refinery's General Director Shukhrat Danbai, Vice President of Technip Italy S.p.A. Mario Tommacelli and Vice President of KazGiproNefteTrans Kadyrzhan Dautalin, an Interfax correspondent reported from the signing.

The project is slated to cost about $30 million, Tommacelli told journalists.

The documentation is to be ready before August 2013. KazGiproNefteTrans will be in charge of obtaining required approvals from the Kazakh authorized agencies.

In May of this year, the Pavlodar refinery concluded technology transfer agreements with a number of foreign companies, including UOP Limited (the UK), Axens (France) and Bechtel Hydrocarbon Technology Solutions (the U.S.).

The project to upgrade the Pavlodar refinery is part of Kazakhstan's national program for refineries development in 2009-2015. The project will raise the refinery's utilization rate to 90% or higher.

Pavlodar's existing units will be upgraded and six new ones constructed by 2015.

Currently, the refinery is controlled by National Company KazMunayGas. It was built in 1978 and has a processing capacity of 7.5 million tonnes of crude a year.

Kazakhstan has three oil refineries: one in Pavlodar, one in Shymkent and another in Atyrau.
