Russia to help China build fast-neutron reactor

BEIJING. June 5 (Interfax) - This summer Russian and Chinese companies could sign the initial documents regarding the construction of an industrial fast-neutron reactor in China.

"The leaders discussed the possibility of building a fast-neutron (FN) reactor, not for research but a full-scale one," Rosatom Corporation chief Sergei Kiriyenko, who is accompanying Russian President Vladimir Putin on this visit to China, told reporters.

"Companies could sign relevant protocols on the initial stages of the work this summer," the Rosatom chief said.

The roadmap signed on Tuesday, regarding cooperation between Rosatom and the Chinese Atomic Energy Authority, is an important document, Kiriyenko said. Whereas previously Russia and China worked under separate contracts, these have now been pooled together, he said. "These are the plans not for one or two years, but for a fairly long-term perspective," the Rosatom chief said.

The roadmap brings together all bilateral projects on NPP construction, as well as those concerning spent nuclear fuel processing and nuclear programs for space.
