Kadyrov claims Chechen separatist emissary Zakayev asked for help returning to Chechnya

GROZNY. June 14 (Interfax) - Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of the Chechen republic, has described prominent Chechen separatist emissary Akhmed Zakayev, who is currently staying in London, as a hypocrite fully controlled by foreign special services.

"This should not cause anyone's surprise. After all, he went through a good acting school. He played various roles on the stage for a long time, including in comedies. Perhaps this has left its imprint on him," Kadyrov said at a meeting with Khizri Aldamov, a so-called former representative of Ichkeria in Georgia.

"Zakayev has repeatedly sought a telephone conversation through different channels. During our conversation, he kept on saying that he is thrilled by the changes in Chechnya and tearfully begged me to help him come back to Russia," he said.

"Zakayev absolutely depends on special services, and he cannot travel anywhere without their knowledge. He would probably like to return home, but his masters shouted, and he was left speechless," he said.

"Zakayev called me 'brother' in our telephone conversation. He claimed that there has never been such a just and efficient leader in the centuries-long history of the Chechen people. He called me a profound believer and a patriot of my people. He said he wants to be my friend and follower. Behind my back, Zakayev makes absolutely different statements. This proves yet again that he is a hypocrite and a windbag. Moreover, he is a coward to the core. He has begged me numerous times through mediators to forgive him for everything he has done against the people. Zakayev's hypocrisy and cowardice show that he has neither faith nor patriotism," Kadyrov said.

"Zakayev has to prove his love for the people and religion in deed rather than make pointless and groundless statements from Western forums," he said.

"Zakayev and his family members live in clover in London. He does not know any need and receives good support from his sponsors. And yet he has the cheek to call on the people in the Chechen republic to take up arms and rise up against the legitimate government. He should come and fight himself if he has enough courage. He should set an example and stop wagging his tongue. He set up a mythical government in London, which consists of him alone. He and [Movladi] Udugov (a former propaganda chief in the separatist Chechen government) sent their children to the best European colleges, while urging residents of Chechnya to join the terrorist ranks. But the time is different now. They cannot deceive anyone," he said.

Kadyrov also charged that Zakayev fully depends on controversial businessman Boris Berezovsky, who also lives in London now. "This is a widely known fact. Zakayev cannot make a single step without his knowledge," he said.
