FESCO looks to build ice-breaker ships at Japanese, Korean, Chinese yards

VLADIVOSTOK. June 18 (Interfax) - OJSC Far East Shipping Company , the parent company of the FESCO Shipping Group, is thinking of having ice-breaker cargo ships for coastal shipping built at shipyards in Japan, South Korea and China, the company's president, Yury Gilts, told Interfax.

"We certainly won't be buying second-hand. They'll be newly built. We're looking at Japanese and Korean yards, and at the best Chinese ones. We've had good experience of work with China. We're also looking at Russian options [for building the ships]," Gilts said.

FESCO had a series of four bulk carriers built at China's Qingshan Shipyard in 2011-2012.

"We want to order very good vessels custom-designed for coastal shipping with good fuel consumption to put us in a good stead for the next 20 years or so," Gilts said.

FESCO, an inter-modal transport company, currently has 49 vessels with overall deadweight of 990,000 tonnes.
