Over 40 wildfires rage in Far East
KHABAROVSK. June 19 (Interfax) - Sixty-two wildfires were registered in the Russian Far East in the past 24 hours, the forestry department for the Far Eastern Federal District reported on Tuesday.
The majority of the fires were registered in Yakutia and the Khabarovsk Territory, the report says.
The area affected by the wildfires in the past 24 hours exceeded 2,400 hectares. Eleven wildfires were eliminated in the forests of the Far Eastern Federal District. Another eight fires were contained," the report says.
According to the agency, 42 wildfires continue to rage in five regions of the Far Eastern Federal District. They currently do not pose a threat to populated areas and economic entities.
Some 1,000 people, 150 equipment units, and 15 aircraft, including nine helicopters, are involved in the firefighting activities.
Over 1,370 wildfires have been registered in the forests of the Far Eastern Federal District on an area over 103,300 hectares since the beginning of the 2012 fire season.
