Atomenergoproyekt to select site for Kursk NPP-2 this year

KURSK. June 20 (Interfax) - OJSC Atomenergoproyekt, the general designer for Kursk NPP (nuclear power plant) #2 will this year be taking steps to select a building site, the company press service said.

Three possible sites are under consideration, each of around 300 hectares - one of which is in Kurchatovsky district and two in the Lgovsky district of Kursk Region. They will be undergoing engineering analysis slated to end by November. Then, at the end of the year, Atomenergoproyekt specialists will draw up reports - on the basis of which recommendations will be offered next spring on the best site for the NPP, taking environmental and technical circumstances into account.

"Based on the received data on ground, underground water, and seismology, our specialists will take on the preparation of pre-project documentation. At the same time, surveying will continue that involves a lengthy cycle, that is, from one to two years," the statement says.

Hydrological surveys have already begun. Near-future plans call for the local installation of an automatic acoustic aerologic complex and the creation of a seismologic monitoring network.
