Polish Foreign Ministry hands note of protest to Belarusian ambassador over journalist's detention
MINSK. June 23 (Interfax) - Belarusian Ambassador to Poland Viktor Gaisenok was summoned to the Polish Foreign Ministry in the wake of the detention in Grodno of Andrzej Poczobut, a Belarusian-born journalist working for the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza, Internet media reported on Saturday with a reference to the Polish Foreign Ministry press service.
Polish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary of State Jerzy Pomianowski handed a note of protest to Gaisenok over Poczobut's detention, the English-language webpage of the Polish Foreign Ministry said.
Poczobut is the chairman of the Central Board of the Union of Poles in Belarus.
"Undersecretary Pomianowski demanded an immediate release of Andrzej Poczobut from detention. He also said that such actions deepen the self-isolation of the Belarus authorities, make its relations with the EU even harder and generate yet another wave of criticism from the international public opinion," the ministry said.
