First step towards Eurasian parliament to be made in Moscow on July 5 - Naryshkin

MINSK. June 26 (Interfax) - Speaker of the Russian Federal Assembly's State Duma Sergei Naryshkin has said he believes in a project to form a parliament of the Eurasian Economic Union.

"I am a great supporter of the Eurasian integration and believe in the successful project to create a parliamentary dimension," Naryshkin told the alumni and faculty of the Academy of Administration under the Belarusian president in Minsk on Tuesday.

The formation of the Eurasian Economic Union on July 1, 2015 will require a review of inter-parliamentary cooperation and formation of a Eurasian Economic Union parliament, he said.

Such a parliament must be created through gradual transformation of the Eurasian Economic Community Inter-Parliamentary Assembly before it becomes a fully-fledged parliament, Naryshkin said. "We have set up a working group whose aim is to create a roadmap for such transformation," the State Duma speaker said. The working group will hold its first session in Moscow on July 5; subsequent meetings will take place in Minsk and Astana, he said.
