EU praises Moldova for consolidating democracy and market economy

BRUSSELS. June 26 (Interfax) - In the context of Moldova's European prospects, the EU-Moldova Cooperation Council in Brussels on Tuesday noted the country's progress in guaranteeing democratic principles and stabilizing democratic institutions and in the functioning of the market economy. In this connection, it pointed out to various opportunities offered by the Eastern Cooperation program in a number of spheres.

In a statement circulated in Brussels, the council said that the EU welcomed Moldova's commitment to achieve political association and economic integration with the EU and confirmed readiness to support the country's efforts in this direction.

The council praised progress in the talks on the association agreement with Moldova that implies an understanding on a free trade zone. In this connection, the EU welcomed the involvement of observers from Transdniestria in the process and urged Chisinau to make additional efforts at the talks.

Brussels also welcomed agreements between the EU and Moldova on common aviation space and the protection of geographical names and the initialing of amendments to the agreement on simplifying travel regulations between EU and Moldova.

The EU confirmed the intensification of efforts in settling the problem of Transdniestria and contribution to the talks in the 5+2 format under OSCE auspices, the document of the EU-Moldova Cooperation Council says.

The council met at the ministerial level on the sidelines of the European Council on Foreign Relations.
