MOSCOW. June 28 (Interfax-AVN) - A Su-27 fighter that crashed in Karelia on Thursday fell in a forest three kilometers away from the Besovets airfield's runway, Col. Vladimir Drik, a spokesman for the Russian Air Force, told Interfax-AVN on Thursday.
"A search and rescue team that was rushed to the crash site on board a Mi-8 helicopter picked the pilots up. The pilots' health status is satisfactory. The crew has been promptly delivered to a medical institution," Drik said.
"The plane fell in a forested area three kilometers away from the runway," he said.
Preliminary findings indicate that the plane did not cause casualties or destruction on the ground. A commission led by the commander of the northwestern Air Force and Air Defense Forces command has departed for the Besovets airfield to determine causes of the crash, he said.
A Su-27UB plane crashed northwest of the Besovets airfield in Karelia at 9:51 a.m. Moscow time on Thursday "while approaching for landing during a planned weather reconnaissance flight," Drik said.
