Geneva conference results a door on Syria settlement - Moscow
MOSCOW. July 2 (Interfax) - Russia sees the final document adopted at the international conference on Syria in Geneva on Saturday as a document that opens the door on settlement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on its website on Monday.
"In our opinion, the final document opens up prospects for effective international assistance to a peaceful settlement in Syria," the Foreign Ministry said.
The settlement is possible " if the parties negotiate steps and measures to implement the Kofi Annan plan fully, and if the UN/Arab League envoy's efforts to launch a political process run by Syrians themselves, are supported," the statement says.
The statement was circulated after talks between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad on Monday.
During the talks Bogdanov informed the Syrian ambassador about the outcome of Saturday's meeting in Geneva.
"Haddam thanked Russia for its consistent advocacy of an earliest possible end to the violence in Syria, its efforts to prevent foreign military interference, and restore peace, security and tranquility in Syria," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"The Syrian ambassador reaffirmed the Syrian leadership's determination to implement the Kofi Annan plan, and to start an inter-Syrian political dialogue in the interests of all Syrians," the statement said.
