Georgia is successfully resisting corruption - EU representative
TBILISI. July 6 (Interfax) - Georgian nationals encounter corruption less frequently than residents of EU countries, a study on the state of corruption presented in Tbilisi on Friday says.
Last year, 99% of Georgian citizens did not experience the extortion of a bribe a single time and in this respect Georgia topped the list in Europe, according to the study the presentation of which was attended by EU ambassador to Tbilisi Philip Dimitrov and Georgian Deputy Justice Minister Giorgy Vashadze.
The study was conducted by IBRD, IDEX, Transparency International-Georgia and EU.
Among the prospective NATO member-states, Georgia is the least corrupt. Compared to EU citizens Georgians encounter corruption in day-to-day life four times less frequently, the study says.
Out of the participants in the study 77% praised Cabinet efforts to fight corruption.
"Georgia actually changed the concept that it is extremely difficult to eradicate corruption. We have concrete results to prove that," Vashadze said.
Meanwhile, Dimitrov said that Georgia succeeded in beating corruption and achieving a high degree of democracy. He also said Georgia is one of the safest countries.
Judging by the results of the study there is no corruption in the Georgian government or justice, he said.
"Georgia is successfully fighting corruption. It has the best indicator in this connection among other Europe countries which is very important not only for Georgia but also for other countries because Georgia is a good example for them," Dimitrov said.
