Russia may take part in peace keeping operation in Syria under UN aegis - Margelov
MOSCOW. July 9 (Interfax) - Russia should take part in a peacekeeping operation in Syria, if the UN Security Council sanctions such an operation, Federation Council's foreign affairs committee chairman Mikhail Margelov said.
"I think that Russia may consider an option of taking part in a peacekeeping operation in Syria, if the UN Security Council makes a relevant decision," Margelov said on the air of the Ekho Moskvy radio station on Monday.
Asked whether it is useful for Russia to take part in a possible peacekeeping operation, he said: "Maybe. This may not be a correct comparison, but when Russian peacekeepers came to former Yugoslavia, this helped to calm down the standoff between rival groups."
Margelov also noted that actions of Russian peacekeepers in Africa and the Middle East makes Russia's image abroad more positive. "I saw them in action many times. They are real professionals who can decently represent our country," he said.
