Armavia decides to buy Airbus and Boeing airliners instead of SSJ
YEREVAN. July 10 (Interfax) - Armenian airline Armavia has decided to acquire one Airbus airliner and one Boeing airliner, the company said on Tuesday.
The airline's management is now taking part in the Farnborough International Airshow in Britain. Representatives of Armavia met with counterparts from Airbus and Boeing on the first day, after which a decision was made to purchase the airliners
Details on the purchases will be released after the close of the Airshow (which has been extended to July 15), Armavia said in a statement.
Armavia earlier said that it had decided against acquiring a second Sukhoi Superjet 100 from CJSC Sukhoi Civil Aircraft, which was to be delivered in June 20-30, 2012. The first Sukhoi Superjet 100 was received on the airline's balance sheet on April 19, 2011 and is now in operation. Armavia planned to acquire several more of these aircraft.
However, a source was quoted on Monday, saying that Armavia had decided against receiving a second SSJ-100 because of the airline's financial instability. "Armavia even has the first SSJ-100 pledged as security. This indicates that the airline has been experiencing financial difficulties and wouldn't be able to pay the leasing costs on the second airliner," the source said.
