Syrian opposition visitor to Moscow lashes out against Russia

MOSCOW. July 11 (Interfax) - A Syrian opposition leader visiting Moscow has railed at Russia's arms sales to the Syrian government and Moscow's alleged support for the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, and has argued that foreign diplomacy is powerless to resolve the Syrian conflict.

"We are passing over [to the Russian government] the indignation and protests of the Syrian people at individual members of the international community that support Assad's regime and sell weapons to it," Burhan Ghalioun, president of the executive committee of the Syrian National Council, an opposition coalition, told a news conference in Moscow.

"The Syrian people can't understand Russian politics. How can our friends continue to hand over weapons to that regime, how can one veto [an anti-Assad resolution] in the [UN] Security Council?" he said.

The international community is "in a vicious circle," and so the Syrians are not expecting any serious help from it in dealing with the Syrian conflict, Ghalioun said. "It's the revolution that will solve the problem and not any negotiations, diplomatic efforts and so on," he said.
