Operation under way to neutralize Tajik general's suspected killers
DUSHANBE. July 24 (Interfax) - A helicopter-assisted operation was launched in the Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous province in eastern Tajikistan early on Tuesday morning to neutralize the people suspected of assassinating the National Security Committee's general, security service sources told Interfax.
The sound of gunfire can be heard in the distance, according to residents of Khorugh, the province's main city located 520 kilometers southeast of the Tajik capital Dushanbe.
"An operation is under way to neutralize the killers of General Abdullo Nazarov," one of the sources said.
Nazarov, who headed the regional branch of the Tajik National Security Committee, was murdered last Saturday. Investigators have blamed members of criminal groups controlling the local tobacco market for the killing.
