Islamic opposition urges Tajik govt to end military operation
DUSHANBE. July 25 (Interfax) - Tajikistan's major opposition force, the Islamic Revival Party - has urged the government to cease the fighting and start talks with the militants.
"In order to avoid fatalities, the Political Council of the Islamic Revival Party is urging an early ceasefire agreement and steps to end the fighting and restore stability," the Political Council said in a statemenet on Wednesday.
A special operation was launched in Khorog at 4 a.m. on July 24 (3 a.m. Moscow time) to track down and catch, or neutralize former opposition field commander Aiyembekov. Maj. Gan. Nazarov was chief of the State Security Committee's department in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. He was killed on July 21.
A similar call was issued on Tuesday by the opposition National Social-Democratic Party.
