Belarusian Army must be prepared for Arab Spring-type events - Lukashenko

MINSK. July 26 (Interfax) - Belarus needs to strengthen military and border security amid global developments, President Alexander Lukashenko said at the Thursday conference on problems of the Armed Forces.

"Any negative trends spread very rapidly [in a globalized world] regardless of geographic borders," he said.

"There are no more enough of such examples, such as the Middle East, Syria and pressure on Iran," he said.

The president proposed to listen to a report of the Belarusian defense minister on the current condition of the Armed Forces. "He had been ordered to take a close look at the Belarusian Armed Forces reformed several years ago. The Arab Spring and the swiftly changing situation in Syria mean that the Army must be prepared. God forbid, something may happen," Lukashenko said.
