Elections could be used to "torpedo" Belarus - Lukashenko
MINSK. Aug 3 (Interfax) - Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has ordered the Prosecutor's Office to prevent any provocations that could be staged during the parliamentary election in the country, the presidential press service told Interfax on Friday.
"We are certain that we are not going to have an easy time during the upcoming political campaign [elections to the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament]. This occasion will be used to torpedo our state in some way once again. But we are certain that this campaign will go well under your [Prosecutor's Office] watchful eye," Lukashenko said on Thursday.
"Your task is to guarantee the rule of law during the election campaign, during the elections and after them. You need to coordinate your work in a way that will allow you to promptly detect and respond to any irregularities together with other law enforcement agencies and the Central Election Commission. Provocative acts must by no means be allowed to happen," the president said.
"Those working at the Prosecutor's Office hold the highest power - be the master of people's fates. And each of you bears great responsibility to the state and the Belarusian people," Lukashenko said.
