Ukrainian services admit hunting Moldovan spy for some time

KYIV. Aug 7 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) followed Moldovan citizen Semyon Nikulin for some time before he was charged with espionage.

"He was caught red-handed with a full spy kit. The SBU had been following him for a long time and his last handover of intelligence took place under control of the Ukrainian counterintelligence agency," a security source told Interfax.

An inquiry is under way, he said.

On August 7 the Ukrainian newspaper Kommersant-Ukraine wrote that a former reporter for the Independent Moldova newspaper and an employee of the Moldpres news agency is suspected of espionage.

Nikulin was arrested in Odessa on April 13, 2012, and is currently held in custody in Kyiv, the newspaper wrote.

The Moldovan Embassy to Ukraine has confirmed the report about Nikulin's arrest and said it is monitoring the situation.
