African swine plague continues to threaten pigs in Krasnodar Territory, Tver region

MOSCOW. Aug 10 (Interfax) - African swine plague, whose outbreaks have become very frequent in Russia recently, continues to affect animals in the Krasnodar Territory and the Tver region.

On Friday, Rosselkhoznadzor reported new outbreaks of this dangerous illness.

Tests of pathological pig material obtained from pigs that died at Pig Farm N1 owned by the firm OOO NAT (Timashevsky district of the Krasnodar Territory, which were performed in the Kropotkinskiaya territorial veterinary lab, yielded genetic material of the African swine plague virus. A total of 2,813 pigs were at the farm at that moment.

In the Tver region, a new outbreak of African swine plague was registered in a farm in the village of Mishutino, Torzhok district. Samples of material collected from the dead animals were tested in the All-Russian Research Institute of Veterinary Virusology and Microbiology.

Measures are now being taken to contain and prevent further spread of the infection, Rosselkhoznadzor has reported.

According to earlier reports, a state of emergency was imposed in the Krasnodar Territory due to the spread of African swine plague on August 7. Quarantine was imposed in the Tver region on July 19.

African swine plague poses a serious danger to pig farms because there is no vaccine against it. Virtually all pigs in affected territories are destroyed and their bodies are burned.
