Syrian official vows to ensure UN observers' security

BEIRUT. Aug 15 (Interfax) - Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad has visited the scene of a Wednesday bomb attack in Damascus and promised that everything possible will be made to ensure security of UN observers, Syrian state television reported on Wednesday.

"I confirm that we support the UN and will do all we can to ensure security of the UN observers so that they can perform their mission," Mekdad said.

It was reported earlier that an explosion took place on Wednesday near the Dama Rose hotel in Damascus, where the UN observers are staying. The bombing injured three people, who are not observers.

Syrian television said the bomb had been planted under a fuel tanker truck at a parking area intended for military vehicles.

The district where the explosion took place is considered an enhanced security area, where several government and military offices are located.
