RZD to start developing Savyolovsky Passage to intensify freight flows in 2014

MOSCOW. Aug 22 (Interfax) - OJSC Russian Railways (RZD) will start modernizing the so-called 'Savyolovsky Passage' in 2014 in order to intensify freight traffic along that route, the company's Senior Vice President Valentin Gapanovich told the press in Saratov on Wednesday.

"We are planning to use that route to organize freight shipments. We are starting to work on this project," he said.

Freight flows on the Savyolovsky route are minor at present. The line is primarily used to transport passengers on suburban routes. At the same time, this 'passage' could help bring cargoes from the capital area to the Oktyabrskaya Railway, including to ports in North-West Russia, with the development of the Moscow-Dmitrov-Kalyazin-Sonkovo-Kirishi-Mga-Petersburg route.
