Russian military to take part in Watchful Eagle-2012 military exercise in Alaska
KHABAROVSK. Aug 25 (Interfax-AVN) - Eastern Military District officials have gone to North America to take part in the Russian-Canadian military exercise Watchful Eagle-2012, Lieutenant-Colonel Alexander Gordeyev, spokesman for the district press service, told Interfax-AVN.
"The first group, led by Major-General Sergei Dronov, commander of the district Air Force and Air Defense, will become part of the main headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the U.S. The second group, led by Major-General Sergei Zhmurin, the head of air defense and aviation, will take part in the work of the backup headquarters in Anchorage, Alaska, the U.S., Gordeyev said.
According to Gordeyev, the anti-terror exercise Watchful Eagle-2012 will be conducted on August 27-29. The purpose of the exercise is to practice interaction between the Russian Armed Forces and the North American aerospace defense command in the event of plane hijacking.
The Russian delegation will also visit the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs at the invitation of the U.S. officials.
