Top German military band to give concert in St. Petersburg

MOSCOW. Aug 27 (Interfax-AVN) - The German military band Musikkorps der Bundeswehr will give a concert at the Kapelle of St. Petersburg on Monday and play the soundtrack from Pirates of the Caribbean.

"Walter Ratzek's military band will play military marches and pieces by Dmitry Shostakovich, Frederick Loewe and Francis Poulenc. They will also play the soundtrack from Pirates of the Caribbean, composed by Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer in 2003, for the first time in Russia," Western Military District spokesman Col. Andrei Bobrun told Interfax-AVN.

The Kapelle of St. Petersburg is not an accidental choice, he said.

"The best military bands usually perform here. Musikkorps der Bundeswehr is Number One on the chart of Germany's top 20 military bands. It is directed by Walter Ratzek and is a team of the best German military musicians. It is the military band that plays at all of Germany's protocol and state-level ceremonies," Bobrun said.

"The military band played in Russia in 2007 and marched along Red Square as a participant in the Kremlin Dawns music festival. This year's guest tour will continue in Yekaterinburg, where the German musicians will give a concert on August 29," he said.

The German military band has arrived in St. Petersburg at the Russian Defense Ministry's invitation as part of the German and Russian cross years, Bobrun said.
