Over 10,000 joined March of Silence in memory of Lokomotiv hockey team in Yaroslavl
YAROSLAVL. Sept 7 (Interfax) - A March of Silence was held in Yaroslavl on Friday in memory of the players, coaches and personnel of Lokomotiv ice hockey team who died in an air crash a year ago.
The police say over 10,000 people joined the procession, including Yaroslavl region Governor Sergei Yastrebov, Yaroslavl City Mayor Yevgeny Urlashov and regional police chief Nikolai Trifonov.
Fans of other teams of the Continental Hockey League took part in the procession along with the fans of the Yaroslavl team.
The procession started from the administration of the Frunzensky district of the city and ended at Arena-2000 stadium. At 4:05 p.m. - the time of the air crash - participants released balloons and then started chanting "Loko! Loko!"
The team was on a flight from Yaroslavl from Minsk when their Yakovlev Yak-42 airliner crashed on September 7, 2011. Forty-four people died - 37 passengers and seven crew members. Only flight engineer Alexander Sizov survived.
