Russia provides $1 Mln for food aid to Djibouti
MOSCOW. Sept 10 (Interfax) - Russia has transferred $1 million to the UN World Food Program in funds for humanitarian aid to Djibouti, which has been hit by a severe drought.
"On September 4, there was an official ceremony to hand over to the government of that country the food aid provided by the Russian Federation by disbursing $1 million to the UN World Food Program specifically for that purpose. Handed over to the Djibouti side were 840 metric tons of foods that will suffice for two months to feed 23,000 people, or 20% of Djibouti's population hit by the worst drought in the Horn of Africa in 60 years," the Russian Foreign Ministry reports on its website.
"Russia's total aid to Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya has exceeded $11.5 million since the humanitarian crisis broke out in that sub-region in early 2011," the report says.
"Russia will continue to take an active part in coordinated international efforts aimed at bringing humanitarian aid to African countries," it says.
