Georgian PM tells U.S. delegation about pre-election situation in Georgia
TBILISI. Sept 11 (Interfax) - Members of the U.S. interdepartmental delegation led by Thomas Melia, State Department Deputy Assistant Secretary in charge of democracy and human rights, discussed the pre-election situation in Georgia with Georgian Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili on Tuesday.
Merabishvili told the U.S. officials about the government's plans regarding security measures during the elections, the Georgian government administration has reported.
The U.S. delegation arrived in Tbilisi on September 10. Among the members of the delegation are officials from the International Development Agency and the U.S. Departments of Defense and Justice.
Melia and members of the U.S. delegation have already met with the leaders of Georgia's opposition parties.
After one such meeting, Bidzina Ivanishvili, leader of the opposition coalition Georgian Dream, told reporters the members of the U.S. delegation had promised to provide as much assistance as possible with the organization of democratic and fair elections in Georgia.
"The delegation is well-informed about the current situation in Georgia, and we also gave them additional information. We also agreed that we will do everything to hold peaceful and democratic elections. They have not come to support the opposition or the government, they have come to support Georgia," Ivanishvili said.
