Medvedev: United Russia must be the leading party

PENZA, Russia. Sept 12 (Interfax) - Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, leader of the United Russia party, has described the latter as "the most powerful political force in the country."

"As the most powerful political force in the country, United Russia must find the place for itself in the new political environment. I hope that it will be the leading place," Medvedev said at a meeting with Penza activists of United Russia.

He claimed no other group is in a position to seek the leading role.

However, "one must demonstrate results if one wants to remain the leader," he said.

"Unlike our political opponents, United Russia does have something to show. There is concrete performance at all levels of government," Medvedev said.

He invited those present to talk "about day-to-day affairs, about the development of the party, about the development of the country, and just about the way you see the future."

"If you have any questions, I will naturally be glad to answer them because I believe it's very important that the leadership of the party, the chairman of the party, should regularly meet with party activists, which is what you are," he said.
