Medvedev suggests differentiated tax regimes for Far East, trans-Baikal region

GORKI. Sept 17 (Interfax) - The Far East and the trans-Baikal region need differentiated tax and investment regimes, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev told Federation Council members on Monday.

"I am increasingly convinced that the region cannot grow without differentiated tax regimes, although a number of our economic departments may not support this idea," he said.

"The traditional state program of the development of the Far East and the trans-Baikal region is worthless without special regimes," he said.

"We must be brave and offer diverse tax and property regimes, which will not be easy and might start heated debates in the government, between regions and on some other levels," Medvedev said.

"However, this is our only chance to attract additional funds," he said.

Medvedev recalled the times of the Russian empire and said, "Certainly, our people cannot be lured simply with a piece of land in the Far East. People, specialists and businessmen need particular and tangible advantages."
