Ukrainian transport carries 3.4% less freight, 3.2% fewer passengers in Jan-Aug

KYIV. Sept 18 (Interfax) - Ukrainian transport companies hauled 509.9 million tonnes of freight in the first eight months of 2012, 3.4% less than in the same period of last year, the State Statistics Service reported.

Freight turnover in the eight months fell 7.2% year-on-year to 261.6 billion tonne-km.

Freight haulage by Ukraine's railroads was unchanged year-on-year at 303.6 million tonnes. Shipments were up 90% for grain and flour, 6.9% for construction materials, 3.8% for coke and 0.4% for chemical and mineral fertilizer, but down 33.1% for crude oil and oil products, 5.5% for ferrous metals, 29.8% for ferrous scrap, 0.5% for hard coal, 8.8% for cement, 1.2% for iron and manganese ore, and 13.4% for forest products.

Ukraine's marine and river merchant fleet carried 4.9 million tonnes of cargo, 20.8% less than a year earlier. International shipments of cargo were down 24.2%.

Ports and industrial docks handled 104.5 million tonnes of cargo, 0.5% more year-on-year. Domestic cargo fell 26.6%, import cargo decreased 12.5% and transshipments fell 19.2%, while export cargo grew by 18.1%.

Automobile transport, including private entrepreneurs, carried 116.7 million tonnes of freight in the first eight months of 2012, 3.1% more year-on-year, and increased freight turnover by 2.8% to 25.6 billion tonne-km.

Trunk pipelines carried 84.6 million tonnes, 19.1% less than a year earlier, as shipments fell 33.2% for oil, 16.5% for gas and 5.3% for ammonia. Transshipments were down 22% for gas, 21.8% for oil and 10% for ammonia.

Air transport carried 69,800 tonnes of cargo, 18% more than a year earlier.

Transport companies carried 4.5 billion passengers in the eight months, 3.2% fewer than a year earlier. Passenger turnover dropped 0.7% to 89.9 billion passenger-km.

Railroads carried 291.2 million passengers (including on urban commuter trains), up 0.1%.

Motor vehicle transport carried 2.3 billion passengers, 6.2% fewer.

Water transport carried 4.7 million passengers, 17.8% fewer than a year earlier, including 15.3% fewer on marine transport. However, international marine passenger transport grew by 25.4%.

Air transport carried 5.5 million passengers in January-August, 10.1% more year-on-year.

Urban electric transport carried 1.9 billion passengers, up 0.1%.
