USAID deviation from humanitarian goals leads to halt of its operations in Russia - Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. Sept 19 (Interfax) - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has tried to influence political processes in Russia, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a commentary published on Wednesday.

"The Russian Foreign Ministry has officially notified the United States that the operations of the United States Agency for International Development must stop on October 1, 2012. The main reason for this decision is that the work of agency representatives in this country far from always met the declared goal of assistance to bilateral humanitarian cooperation," the commentary said.

"There have been attempts to influence political processes, including elections at various levels, and civil society institutes through the distribution of grants," it said.
