Russian, Norwegian experts end evaluation of radioactive dumps in Arctic
ARKHANGELSK. Sept 19 (Interfax) - A Russian-Norwegian expedition team has returned to Arkhangelsk after examining dumps of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel in the Kara Sea, the Northern Hydro-Meteorological and Environmental Monitoring Department reported on Wednesday.
The Ivan Petrov research vessel dropped anchor in the Arkhangelsk seaport in the early morning hours of September 19. It had Russian and Norwegian researchers and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) specialists aboard.
The month-long expedition evaluated the condition of dumps of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel on Novaya Zemlya, in the Stepovoi and Litke Bays and adjoining waters of the Kara Sea.
The specialists took water samples, made spectrometric analyses and examined the most significant dumps with a remotely controlled submersible.
The data will help evaluate the current radiation level in the dumps and monitor dynamics since the 1990s.
