Eight militants killed in Nalchik counter-terrorist operation

NALCHIK. Sept 20 (Interfax) - Kabardino-Balkaria's Interior Ministry has announced the completion of the main phase of a counter-terrorist operation, which was launched in the republic's capital Nalchik early on Thursday morning.

"Eight members of armed groups trapped in a privately owned house on Clara Zetkin Street were neutralized in a shootout," the ministry said in a press release.

Two of the militants killed in Nalchik have tentatively been identified as Shamil Ulbashev and Zalim Tutov, local gang leaders wanted by the federal authorities for their involvement in serious crimes. There were two women among the militants.

However, the counter-terrorist operation continues. Investigators are working at the site. Large quantities of weapons and ammunition were confiscated.

None of the civilians and officers of law enforcement agencies has been killed or injured in the operation.
