Russia bans import of genetically modified corn NK603 from EU
MOSCOW. Sept 25 (Interfax) - Rospotrebnadzor has suspended the import into Russia and the turnover on the territory of Russia of genetically modified corn NK603 following reports on the negative influence of this product on lab animals.
The reports, which were published in the magazine Food and Safety Toxicology, contained the results of tests performed by a group of Italian and French scientists on the herbicide Roundup and genetically modified corn, which is tolerant of this substance, Rospotrebnadzor has reported on its website.
"The article contains the results of scientific research indicating negative influence of genetically modified corn NK603 on rats. The import into Russia and turnover on the territory of Russia of genetically modified corn NK603 has been temporarily suspended until complete information on the matter is received," Rospotrebnadzor said in a press release.
Rospotrebnadzor has asked the Nutrition Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences to evaluate the conclusions drawn by the European scientists. An official letter seeking comments on the situation has also been sent to the Directorate-General for Health and Consumers of the European Commission.
