Moldovan President Timofti urges Russia to pull out troops from Transdniestria
CHISINAU. Sept 27 (Interfax) - Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti urged Russia to withdraw its troops from Transdniestria in his speech at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Moldovan presidential press service told Interfax on Thursday.
"All our international partners share our opinion that there is no alternative to a unified Moldova. Twenty years is enough to overcome mistrust. It is time to begin building a common future," the press service said quoting Timofti as saying.
The preservation of the existing situation in Transdniestria is no longer "viable," he said.
"Transdniestria should be granted special status within Moldova, which would enable it to exercise self-government at a comfortable level," Timofti said, adding that, in his view, "a solution to the Transdniestria conflict should be found within the framework of the 5+2 negotiations."
This solution should bring about "an acceptable compromise based on the principles of Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity," Timofti said.
Timofti's current visit to the U.S. has been his fourth foreign trip in the present capacity. He earlier traveled to Brussels, Bucharest and Kyiv.
