Probability of terrorists using weapons of mass destruction is low, but consequences can be terrible - UN Security Council

MOSCOW. Oct 3 (Interfax) - Mike Smith, executive director of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee, has agreed with Russian Federal Security Service Director Alexander Bortnikov that the situation in the Middle East poses a threat of weapons of mass destruction falling into the hands of terrorists.

At the meeting between the heads of the special services, security bodies, and law enforcement agencies of foreign countries that are partners of the Russian Federal Security Service held in Moscow on Wednesday, Smith reiterated that Resolution 1540 of the UN Security Council requires all countries to control the dissemination of their weapons of mass destruction technologies and do everything to prevent "unreliable elements" from gaining access to these weapons.

Smith said the probability of such a terrorist attack involving the use of weapons of mass destruction is generally not high, but the consequences could be terrible.

The UN Security Council official refrained from comments on the possibility of weapons of mass destruction falling into the hands of militants in Syria.

Bortnikov said earlier at the meeting that the threat of terrorist activity spreading to the Middle East and Northern Africa is now increasing.
