Pressure on election commissions unacceptable - EU ambassador to Georgia
TBILISI. Oct 3 (Interfax) - The European Union's mission chief in Georgia Philip Dimitrov said a group of citizens has been trying to put pressure on district election commissions in order to change the outcome of the October 1 parliamentary polls.
Reports have arrived that protestors have been challenging the results of voting, Dimitrov told the press after visiting the Georgian Central Election Commission.
Georgia assumed obligations to observe the principle of supremacy of law, and so did the party leaders. Protestors at some polling stations cast a shadow on the leaders of their parties, he said.
Everyone has the right to challenge the outcome of the elections, but this should be done within the realm of law, the diplomat said.
Chiora Taktakishvili, a representative of the formerly governing Georgian party, United National Movement, said at a press briefing on Wednesday that several hundred supporters of the Georgian Dream coalition had staged protests against what they called vote rigging at polling stations in four Georgian districts.
