Air strikes launched on militants near Makhachkala
ROSTOV-ON-DON. Oct 9 (Interfax) - Air strikes, which were mistakenly taken for explosions by local residents, were launched against a suspected hideout of an armed group on the outskirts of Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan in Russia's North Caucasus.
"An air strike was carried out in the mountainous and forested area during a counter-militant operation on Tuesday morning. The air strike targeted an uninhabited district, where gang members might be hiding," a source in law enforcement agencies told Interfax.
An Interfax correspondent earlier reported two powerful blasts, which happened within five minutes of each other in Makhachkala on Tuesday morning.
Claims of explosions are being verified, a Dagestan Interior Ministry spokesman told Interfax.
