About 1,000 BrahMos Russian-Indian cruise missiles to be supplied to Indian Army - Serdyukov

NEW DELHI. Oct 10 (Interfax-AVN) - The BrahMos project is an illustrative example of successful military-technical cooperation between Russia and India, Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said after the 12th meeting of the Russian-Indian Intergovernmental Commission on Military-Technical Cooperation on Wednesday.

"The joint missile product has been put into service by the Indian Army and Navy and serial production has begun. The missile is being modified for aircraft. The missile supply to the Indian Armed Forces stands at approximately 1,000," he said.

Russia and India have a vast potential of cooperation in air defense systems, modernization of planes and helicopters of the Indian Air Force and infantry combat vehicles and tanks of the Army, after-sale maintenance of Russian hardware and naval systems, he said.

The BrahMos missile was built for destruction of a broad range of naval targets. Its range is up to 290 kilometers, supersonic speed of up to 2.8 Mach and payload of up to 250 kilograms; the missile has high stealth qualities. The three-ton missile flies along a variable trajectory on the altitudes from 10 meters to 14,000 meters. This is a fire-and-forget missile that does not require guidance after launch.
